Junior Tennis

All junior members are eligible to compete with weekend competition teams.

We are part of the Eastern Region Tennis (ERT) association.

This competition runs over the Summer Season (October – March) and Winter Season (April to September), commencing on Saturday and Sunday at 8:30am and 9am respectively.

Please contact our Junior Convenor, for any expressions of interest or enquiries.

JUNIOR COMPETITION FORMATS

The Junior Competition is open to all players under 19 (as of 12 September 2021). You can choose a Saturday morning competition (8.30am start) or a Sunday morning competition (9am start) – or both if you are really keen!

There are 5 different competitions:

  1. Junior development competition (JDC) – mixed teams for children under 12*. These games are played with the Red (u10), Orange (u11) and Green (u12) slower balls.  Three players are required each week and each player plays 2 doubles.

  2. Junior Open Singles Doubles (JOSD) – mixed teams.  4 players are required each week and each player plays 1 single and 2 doubles.

  3. Girls Singles Doubles (GSD) – 3 players are required each week and each player plays 1 single and 2 doubles.

  4. Boys Singles Doubles (BSD) – either 3 (Sunday) or 4 (Saturday) players are required each week and each player plays 1 single and 2 doubles.

  5. Junior Open Rubbers (JOR) – mixed teams with 2 players required each week and each player plays 1 single (comprising 2 sets) and 1 doubles (one set).

*Please note that players must not turn the ‘under age’ at any stage during the season.  For example, if your child is registered in Red U10 then they must not turn 10 on or prior to 12 September 2021.

EXPECTATIONS IN THE JUNIOR COMPETITION

To be part of the competition, you are part of a team. There are usually 4-6 children in a team.  Each player needs to play when they are rostered on, and give the team manager as much advance notice as possible of any weeks when they are unavailable.

The Canterbury Tennis Club, including the Junior Tennis Competition, is run by volunteers. The Junior Competition needs every team to have an adult team manager and the role is not onerous.

The manager will be given a briefing pack prior to the start of the first round with detailed responsibilities such as developing a roster and, when the team is playing a home game, making sure that an adult from their team is available for host duties.

The home duties are: opening the club house and courts, handing out the match balls, texting a copy of the completed scoresheet to the Junior Convenor, making sure the players bag the courts, and locking up the club house and courts at the end.

PLAYER / PARENT INFORMATION EVENING

Prior to the commencement of the Winter Season Competition an information evening for new and returning players, parents and team managers will be held – the date for which will be advised closer to the start of the season.

CLUB POLO TOPS

It is expected that all juniors playing for Canterbury Tennis Club in the ERT competition wear the Club’s shirt.  These are being sold at cost price of $30.  Please contact us if you need to purchase –  ctcjuniorconvenor@gmail.com.
